THE HIRING PROCESS
Applicants considering employment as a Police Officer (Uncertified and Certified) must successfully pass each step of the pre-employment process before progressing to the next. All applicants must submit an online application to City of Smyrna Human Resources via the city's website at www.smyrnacity.com.

1. Physical Ability Test

The physical agility test is conducted by the City of Smyrna Police Training Division.

Our test is the same as the Physical Ability Test (PAT) that will be required for each candidate enrolled in a basic law enforcement course attending any law enforcement academy in the state. The PAT has been validated and approved by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and is now the POST approved PAT for all basic law enforcement candidates. The test is basically a timed obstacle course. View a video example of the test here. The course is just a few feet larger than half of a basketball court and must be completed in 2 minutes, six seconds or less.

2. Panel Interview Board

3. Preliminary Background Check

All potential employees of the City of Smyrna Police Department must undergo a complete background check. The investigation checks for criminal history, DUI's, a pattern of traffic violations, excessive number of terminations from previous employers, financial status, and drug use, possession or distribution.

4. Interview with Police Chief

5. Conditional Offer of Employment

6. Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) Test

7. Extensive Background Check Completion

8. Psychological Exam

9. Medical Physical Exam and Drug Screen
The physical exam is completed by a physician to determine whether you are able to perform the functions that may be required of you while employed with the City of Smyrna Police Department.
