Read the Reading Bowl: From the Desk of Zoe Washington

Read the Reading Bowl with Ms. Amy
Virtual Book Reviews for Tweens (ages 9-12)

You may have heard of the Reading Bowl, but do you know how it started? It all began with a school librarian in Dekalb County named Helen Ruffin. Her vision was to create a reading competition for Georgia students, using books nominated for the Georgia Children’s Book Awards. Thanks to her dedication, the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl was born! Now 4th to 12th grade students from all over the state of Georgia come together each year to to test their knowledge.

Reading Bowl participants are all winners, because they get to read fantastic books! Teachers, librarians, and tens of thousands of young people across the state choose nominees for the Georgia Children’s Book Awards, and their goal is to foster a love of reading and introduce Georgia students to books of literary excellence. The annual award, which was established in 1968, is given in two categories: picture books and middle grade books.

Each month, Ms. Amy will review one of the 4th & 5th grade nominees. So if you aren't sure which book to start with, need a recap before the Reading Bowl, or just want to know what everyone is talking about, tune in each month for the next book!
