The Aztecs were a fierce tribe of warriors who settled in the Valley of Mexico in the 13th century CE. They fought endless wars with neighboring tribes until they dominated most of Middle America.
One of the most important aspects of Aztec religion was the sun. The Aztecs called themselves the "People of the Sun". They felt that in order for the sun to rise each day the Aztecs needed to perform rituals and sacrifices to give the sun strength. The Aztec Sun Stone (Piedra del Sol in Spanish), is an enormous basalt disk covered with hieroglyphic carvings of calendar signs and other images referring to the Aztec creation myth. The stone is currently on display at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
