Celebrate Black History Month by painting a canvas tote in a style that pays homage to the strength and artistry of the quilters of Gee’s Bend.
Gee’s Bend is an isolated rural community just southwest of Selma, Alabama and was once the site of a cotton plantation. After the Civil War, many emancipated slaves stayed in Gee’s Bend, becoming sharecroppers.
Economic difficulty and need led the quilters of Gee’s Bend to develop a quilting style known for geometric flair and lively improvisation. Such quilts, sewn from scraps, now grace museums across the world, their beauty compared to the works of Klee and Matisse.
Formed in 2003, the women of the Gee’s Bend Collective continue creating quilts.
