The Holiday Sanitation Schedule - Christmas 2023 & New Year's Day 2024

Holiday Sanitation Schedule - Christmas to New Year's
Special Note: Please note that the curbside sanitation schedule will differ a bit from the closing schedule for administrative offices. Though City offices are closed on Mon., Dec. 25 and Tues., Dec. 26 in observance of the Christmas Holiday (with public safety remaining operational), sanitation crews will be taking Fri., Dec. 22 and Mon., Dec. 25 as holiday. The main adjustment to the curbside schedule for Christmas falls upon the week of Dec. 18 - 22 with the schedule adjusting backward one day. The schedule for the week is as follows:
Christmas Eve (Observed Friday, December 22, 2023)
- Collections will move back one day
- Tuesday (12/19) routes will be picked up on Monday (12/18)
- Wednesday (12/20) routes will be picked up on Tuesday (12/19)
- Thursday (12/21) routes will be picked up on Wednesday (12/20)
- Friday (12/22) routes will be picked up on Thursday (12/21)
- No yard waste or large items this week
Christmas Day (Observed Monday, December 25, 2023)
- No yard waste or large items the week of Dec. 25 - 29
As always, we appreciate your attention to the adjustment and in working with us to make sure that collections can happen. If you miss your adjusted collection because your receptacle was not at the curb by 7:00 am on the adjusted day, please be aware that we may not be able to accommodate a special collection or return to your neighborhood during this adjusted schedule week.
- Stickers are posted on your City issued trash receptacle (yellow sticker) with notice of what holidays are observed. The sticker is on the lid of the City issued receptacle, posted by City staff earlier this year. We recommend that you consult it weekly to make sure that you are aware of upcoming holidays.
- Your receptacle must be at the curb no later than 7:00 am on the assigned or the adjusted collection day each week. This applies to all days, adjusted or otherwise. Additionally, route timing may be adjusted for various reasons at any time and your assigned collection may be missed if you do not place the receptacle at the curb by 7:00 am – on your regular day or an adjusted day during a holiday week. (Your receptacle may be placed at the curb after 6:00 pm on the day prior to the scheduled or adjusted collection day, and should be removed from the curb by the end of the assigned or the adjusted collection day, respectively.)
- There will be no yard waste or large item collections the week of Thanksgiving. No exceptions. The last yard waste collection day prior to Thanksgiving was Mon. 11-13. The next yard waste collection day will be Mon. 11-27. Again, the yard waste collection day/time for the week of Thanksgiving must be used to collect all four days of routes within three days with Thursday and Friday collections combined into Wednesday. We thank you for your understanding.
- In 2022 two Federal holidays were added to the City observed holidays. Please be aware that even if a holiday lands on a weekend day, the holiday will be observed on a day during the week with staff receiving the benefit of a holiday and your curbside schedule adjusting. (An example of this is Veterans Day. Veterans Day 2023 fell on Saturday, but the Federal and the City observation occurred on Friday. There is a similar adjustment to plan for at the end of the week prior and the week of Christmas 2023. Please see the notation below).
- In May of 2023, the yard waste collection day was changed from Wednesday to Monday to help get your yard waste collected sooner and to reduce the number of adjustments required of you to holidays, overall. Information regarding the change was provided via mail, by signage posted in neighborhoods, as well as on the website and through social media postings. Moving forward, all attempts are made to provide reminder signage in advance of observed holidays where there will be an adjustment to your normal collection day. Keep in mind that on occasion, holidays fall closely together.
- The holiday curbside schedule is posted on the City website at https://www.smyrnaga.gov/departments/departments/public-works/holiday-schedule-for-sanitation-recyclingAdditionally, notices are placed on the events calendar of the website (and on the “What’s Happening” front page notifications space of the website), as well as posted to social media (Facebook and Instagram). The notices are also listed on your mailed utility billing. The website address is SmyrnaGa.gov / Facebook is www.Facebook.com/CityofSmyrnaGa / Instagram is www.Instagram.com/CityofSmyrnaGa
Again, the curbside sanitation schedule for Christmas holidays is as follows:
- No yard waste collection on Mon. 12-18 / Tues. routes will shift to Mon.
- Tuesday routes will be picked up on Mon. 12-18
- Wednesday routes will be picked up on Tues. 12-19
- Thursday routes will be picked up on Wed. 12-20
- Friday routes will be picked up on Thurs. 12-21
- There will be no collections on Friday, December 22 as offices will be closed
- There will be no yard waste collection on Mon. 12-25
With no curbside yard waste or large item collection the week of December 25 and Monday, January 1 being New Year’s Day with a holiday sanitation schedule also applied, the next available date for collection of yard waste, including live Christmas trees, is Mon. 1-8-2024. Look for updates from the Keep Smyrna Beautiful program for opportunities to recycle your live tree/garland to help avoid landfill impacts.
New Year’s Day:
Will be observed on Mon. 1-1-2024. The only adjustment for this week is that there will be no yard waste or collections on Monday. The next yard waste collection day is Mon. 1-8-2024.
