Red-light running is a deadly epidemic. With approximately one-third of all intersection fatalities occurring at signalized interchanges across the nation, we must make system improvements with safety in mind. Red-light safety cameras have proven to reduce the number of red-light running collisions and their associated injuries and fatalities.

The City of Smyrna is dedicated to keeping its community safe. In order to do so, the City of Smyrna implemented a red-light safety camera program in June of 2023. The purpose of this program is to increase traffic safety in the city by reducing red-light running violations, collisions, and injuries without affecting city funds. 

The use of red-light safety cameras in Georgia was authorized under . Motor Vehicles and Traffic § 40-6-20 - Obedience to Traffic-Control Devices.

A red-light running violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. No images of the driver will be captured. 

The intersection(s) with safety camera(s) are listed below. Each intersection is marked clearly with signs to alert drivers that cameras are in use ahead.

A comprehensive evaluation was conducted to determine where red-light running commonly occurs and where red-light safety cameras are most likely to improve road safety and reduce red-light running.

Red-light safety cameras will be operational 24/7. 

The fine amount for a red-light safety camera is $70. 

No, this citation is not considered a “moving violation”. It is a civil citation holding the registered owner responsible for the violation (like a parking ticket.) No points can be assessed for this violation, and it will not affect your insurance rates. Drivers who receive red-light safety camera violations are cited for red-light violations only.

The Smyrna Police Department reviews each incident before a citation is issued.

Based upon images captured by the automated enforcement program, your vehicle was determined to have committed a red-light violation. As the vehicle owner, the Notice of Violation is mailed to you.

If you don't agree with your red-light violation, you have the right to contest the violation with the Office of Administrative Review. You may complete an Affidavit of Non-Responsibility and attach supporting documentation found on www.violationinfo.com. The Affidavit must be received by the due date of your Notice. The Affidavit and supporting documentation will be reviewed and will result in either dismissal of the notice or the scheduling of an administrative hearing. You will be notified in writing of any action taken.

1. What will this program cost the City of Smyrna and its taxpayers?

   The road safety camera program is set up to be fully funded through fines paid by red-light runners. According to the Federal Highway Administration, by reducing crashes, red-light safety cameras annually save communities $39,000 to $50,000 in collision-related expenses per location.

   Revenue generated from the program will help fund other traffic safety initiatives throughout the city.

2. What directions of traffic are enforced?

The red-light safety cameras will be enforcing straight-through, left-hand turns, and U-turn red-light running violations. No right-hand turn violations will be enforced.
